3 Days 2 Nights

About this expedition

This compact Expedition reveals the cultural and natural highlights of Burkina Faso, one of West Africa’s most authentic and least explored countries. From the vibrant capital Ouagadougou, birthplace of revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara, the journey leads to the atmospheric city of Bobo Dioulasso, famous for its Sudano-Sahelian mud mosque, artisan quarters, and legendary live music scene. Along the way we explore the lush southwest of the country with the surreal Sindou Peaks, the striking Domes of Fabédougou, and the refreshing Karfiguéla Waterfalls, while visiting traditional villages where pottery, blacksmithing, and ancestral customs remain part of daily life. It’s a rare opportunity to experience the rhythm, landscapes, and cultural soul of Burkina Faso in just a few unforgettable days.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Ouagadougou → Bobo Dioulasso

Arrival in Ouagadougou and immediate departure toward Bobo Dioulasso, the cultural capital of Burkina Faso. The scenic drive crosses classic savannah landscapes dotted with baobabs and mango trees, with a stop for lunch along the way. Upon arrival in Bobo, explore the city’s highlights including the striking Grand Mosque, the historic Kibidwé artisans’ quarter with its traditional blacksmiths, the bustling central market, and the old colonial railway stationlinking Burkina Faso to the coast. In the evening, enjoy live traditional music in one of Bobo’s legendary local bars. Overnight in Bobo Dioulasso.

Day 2 — Bobo Dioulasso → Banfora → Sindou Peaks → Bobo

Day trip into one of Burkina Faso’s most beautiful regions. Drive through lush sugarcane plantations toward Banfora to visit the surreal rock formations of the Domes of Fabédougou, followed by time to relax or swim at the beautiful Karfiguéla Waterfalls. In the afternoon continue to the dramatic Sindou Peaks, a spectacular landscape of needle-like sandstone formations. Visit Kawara village to see traditional pottery and local dance before returning to Bobo Dioulasso for the night.

Day 3 — Bobo Dioulasso → Ouagadougou & Capital Exploration

Return to Ouagadougou with stops along the way, including the hilltop village of Koro, known for its blend of animist and Christian traditions, and Bazoulé, famous for its sacred crocodiles and women’s garden cooperatives. Upon arrival in the capital, explore Ouagadougou’s key landmarks including the Monument of Thomas Sankara, the FESPACO Monument, the lively craft market, the Grand Mosque, and the Monument of National Heroes before concluding the expedition.

The best way to see not only the Mt Hagen festival but also the highlights of the PNG highlands. Safe, exciting, and lots of fun.

Indian Himalayas & Bhutan

A spiritual and cultural-focussed expedition, not the typical style of other Wander trips, but I absolutely loved it. Bhutan is beautiful and this expedition was the best way to see it, the tricky visa and tour guide requirements were all handled and the itinerary gave the very best of the country in a few days. Northern India was equally serene and even as someone who hates hiking, having a great group to champion you along the way made it fun.

West Africa III

The best overland adventure you could ever ask for. Two weeks, 22 people, 6 cars, endless laughs. Sure, the days are long, and you definitely need to bring snacks, but it’s so much fun and the best way to see the parts of Africa that most people don’t go to! And it has everything - beach, nature, pool days, local communities, cities and middle-of-nowhere adventures. I’d even go as far as to say I’d do it again….. never say never!
