Mali IV

Wed, 7 Oct 2026 – Sat, 10 Oct 2026

4 Days 3 Nights

About this expedition

This is not a typical Expedition — it’s a rare opening into one of Africa’s most legendary civilizations. In just a few days we step into the heart of Mali, cradle of the Mali Empire and home to some of the most extraordinary mud-brick cities on Earth. From the sacred cliffs and Manding legends of Siby, to the historic river kingdoms of Ségou and the breathtaking Great Mosque of Djenné, this Expedition dives deep into West Africa’s cultural soul. Based in vibrant Bamako, with its music, markets, and Niger River life, the journey blends history, tradition, and raw authenticity in a way very few travelers ever experience. And if conditions allow, a once-in-a-lifetime charter extension to Timbuktu and Mopti — two of the most mythical cities of the Sahara — may open the door to one of the world’s most elusive destinations.

Itinerary

The itinerary will include Bamako, Siby, Ségou, and Djenné as long as security reports allow at the time of travel.

The Timbuktu & Mopti charter will be offered as an optional add-on if operational conditions permit, before Mali IV Expedition starts (Oct 6th).

Optional Extension — Timbuktu & Mopti (If Operational)

If conditions allow, an optional charter flight extension will be offered to visit the legendary desert city of Timbuktuand the river port of Mopti, including their iconic mud mosques, historic manuscript libraries, and Tuareg cultural heritage.

Mali IV Expedition:

Oct 7 — Arrival in Bamako → Siby (Day Trip)

Arrival in Bamako and transfer to the Manding heartland near Siby, one of the legendary cradles of the Mali Empire. Explore the dramatic Arch of Kamajan, sacred caves linked to Manding history, and nearby mud villages before experiencing vibrant Malinké mask and Dogon dances. Return to Bamako in the evening. Overnight in Bamako.

Oct 8 — Bamako → Ségou → Djenné (Subject to Security Conditions)

Early departure along the Niger River to Ségou, former capital of the Bambara Kingdom, where we visit historic mud mosques, royal sites, and traditional craft workshops. Continue toward the legendary city of Djenné, home to the iconic Great Mosque, one of the largest mud-brick structures in the world. Overnight in Djenné or Ségou depending on security and logistics.

Oct 9 — Return to Bamako & Capital Exploration

Return to Bamako with time to explore the capital’s most fascinating corners, including the Voodoo Market, the lively Recycling Market, traditional neighborhoods, and the banks of the Niger River. Overnight in Bamako or end of program.

Around midnight there is a direct flight to Niamey, to continue exploring the Sahel with our Niger II Gerewol Expedition.

Papua New Guinea I

The best way to see not only the Mt Hagen festival but also the highlights of the PNG highlands. Safe, exciting, and lots of fun.

Indian Himalayas & Bhutan

A spiritual and cultural-focussed expedition, not the typical style of other Wander trips, but I absolutely loved it. Bhutan is beautiful and this expedition was the best way to see it, the tricky visa and tour guide requirements were all handled and the itinerary gave the very best of the country in a few days. Northern India was equally serene and even as someone who hates hiking, having a great group to champion you along the way made it fun.

West Africa III

The best overland adventure you could ever ask for. Two weeks, 22 people, 6 cars, endless laughs. Sure, the days are long, and you definitely need to bring snacks, but it’s so much fun and the best way to see the parts of Africa that most people don’t go to! And it has everything - beach, nature, pool days, local communities, cities and middle-of-nowhere adventures. I’d even go as far as to say I’d do it again….. never say never!
