About this expedition

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the hidden gem of Libya, a country that has been off-limits to tourists for over a decade due to Civil War. Get ready for a thrilling adventure as we journey through Libya’s rich history, from the underrated World Wonder of Leptis Magna to the hidden treasures of Sabratha. We’ll even venture for the first time in decades to Eastern Libya, a part of the country that was closed off to tourists! Join us on a road trip along the lesser known country in the Mediterranean, and discover the magic of Libya for yourself!

Itinerary

Day 1: Sabratha & Tripoli.

We will fly in the early morning with Libyan wings (roundtrip ticket costing around 200 euros) from Tunis to Mitiga, Tripoli. After clearing our arrival, we will drive straight to Sabratha, one of the most important historical sites in Libya. This city dates back to 500 BC and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 500 BC, the Phoenicians used Sabratha as a seaport and important trading post, and the Romans also utilized the area for its harbor. The city was damaged in a fourth-century earthquake and was later rebuilt to become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Libya today. The theater is probably the most popular site in Sabratha, dating back to around 175 AD, with a large 43-meter stage. It is believed that the theater could accommodate up to 5,000 spectators. There are also baths, temples, and a spectacular amphitheater that could house up to 10,000 spectators who would arrive to watch the duels that took place.

We will spend the afternoon exploring the capital including the Martyr's Square, the Bazaar, the Old Town, the Italian colonial buildings with an espresso and a Shisha, and enjoying a warm welcome dinner.

Day 2: Leptis Magna & Tripoli.

On the fifth day, we will visit the outstanding site at Leptis Magna, one of the greatest ancient sites in the world. Originally a Phoenician trading port, it prospered for nearly 1000 years before being brought down by Vandal invasions and sandstorms. During the reign of Libyan Emperor Septimius Severus, it was second only to Rome and housed over 100,000 people. This vast city remained buried for some 1300 years, and it was not until the 1920s that a major excavation by Italian and Libyan archaeologists revealed the limestone and marble wonders that we explore today. After our visit, we will have lunch nearby the site before returning to Tripoli to continue exploring in the afternoon and to enjoy our last dinner together.

Day 3: Fly to East Libya. Explore Benghazi

Enjoy your time in Benghazi, exploring its cultural sites and vibrant city life that has been closed for tourists for decades.

Day 4: Cyrene

Visit Cyrene, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, to explore its Greek and Roman archaeological wonders. A site that has been out of reach for foreigners until now.

Day 5: Toliemita, Gaser Libya, and Return to Tripoli

Discover the historical charm of Toliemita and Gaser Libya before returning to Tripoli for an evening at leisure.

Day 6: Tripoli

Dedicate your last full day to any sites or activities in Tripoli you might have missed, or enjoy shopping for souvenirs.

Indian Himalayas & Bhutan

A spiritual and cultural-focussed expedition, not the typical style of other Wander trips, but I absolutely loved it. Bhutan is beautiful and this expedition was the best way to see it, the tricky visa and tour guide requirements were all handled and the itinerary gave the very best of the country in a few days. Northern India was equally serene and even as someone who hates hiking, having a great group to champion you along the way made it fun.

West Africa III

The best overland adventure you could ever ask for. Two weeks, 22 people, 6 cars, endless laughs. Sure, the days are long, and you definitely need to bring snacks, but it’s so much fun and the best way to see the parts of Africa that most people don’t go to! And it has everything - beach, nature, pool days, local communities, cities and middle-of-nowhere adventures. I’d even go as far as to say I’d do it again….. never say never!
